When Should I Consider Wrinkle-Reducing Treatments?

Wrinkles are a natural part of your skin, especially as you age. There are also other factors that can cause them, or make the ones you already have more pronounced and visible. Some people just accept them and move on, but for you, wrinkles may make you feel old and tired even when you’re not.

When it comes to full aesthetic care, the team at GLO Aesthetics in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, knows exactly how to treat wrinkles. We offer a variety of procedures that range from noninvasive to minimally invasive, and each offers its own benefits. Dr. James Volpe discusses the options with you and determines which one or combination will work best for you.

What causes your wrinkles

The main culprit is age. Collagen and healthy skin tissue are reduced and so is the quality of each. Then the dermis, or inner layer of your skin, which is normally thick, begins to thin out. When the skin loses its elasticity and structure, it sags and creases, and wrinkles look much more prominent.

Other causes are things we actually have some control over. The sun can severely damage your skin and cause spots and wrinkles, so sun protection is essential, and sunscreen, hats, and coverings can help eliminate the risk. Plus, sunglasses prevent you from squinting, which also causes wrinkles. Another factor is smoking, and one more reason to quit is that smoking actually reduces collagen production.

Your skin needs moisture, oils, and collagen, and when they’re reduced, wrinkles happen. It’s also a bit ironic that being human creates wrinkles. Whenever we laugh, frown, or make expressions, we can develop frown lines, crow’s feet, and other creases.

When to get wrinkle-reducing treatments

If you look at yourself in the mirror and aren’t happy with what you see, that can affect your personality and emotional well being. This is especially true with your facial skin since that’s your introduction to the world. If you’re feeling self-conscious about the way you look, getting a wrinkle-reducing treatment can make a big difference.

A lot of skin and facial products promise a lot of things, and with over the counter creams, their effectiveness depends on the type and quality of ingredients. Even if they’re top of the line, they can be expensive and limiting in what they can actually do. While prescribed medications like retinoids may fare better, they do have side effects to contend with. This can include dry, red, irritated, and even burning skin.

So if these options are not providing the results you want, you need a different treatment. And if you simply want to look younger and regain that natural, healthy, and vibrant-looking skin, reducing your wrinkles and rejuvenating your skin is the right decision. Come in to see Dr. Volpe for a consultation to discuss your goals.

Treatment options for wrinkles

At GLO Aesthetics there are three particular treatment options we recommend. The first is the noninvasive Icon™ Aesthetic System. This is a laser that sends energy and heat into your skin, which gets rid of bad tissue, reduces the appearance of wrinkles, and, at the same time, stimulates the body to make healthy, new collagen and skin tissue. Plus. you’re in and out of the office with little to no downtime.

The second treatment is Botox®, which is injected into the areas that cause your wrinkles. It’s a safe toxin called onabotulinumtoxinA that reduces muscle activity, so it’s particularly effective on wrinkles caused by facial movement, like frown lines and crow’s feet. Though keep in mind that its effects will wear off over time.

The third option is also an injectable called dermal fillers, which can be combined with Botox injections. These literally fill in and add volume to the skin, so wrinkles and creases become plumper and filled out, thus reducing them. This is also a temporary treatment, but you can repeat both injections every few months.

Once you make the decision to get wrinkle-reducing treatments, Dr. Volpe goes through your medical history and skin health and discusses what you’re looking to achieve. Then we proceed with one or more of the treatments, reduce those wrinkles, and have you looking healthy and younger.
