Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

A Botox injection is a safe, well-researched, and FDA-approved anti-aging procedure that helps smooth out wrinkles and facial creases.

The procedure involves injecting you with a purified toxin, but don’t let that alarm you. Botox affects the nerve impulses of the targeted facial muscles and “freezes” them so they no longer cause wrinkles or creases to form in the skin. This process limits the contractions of your facial muscles, but Dr. Volpe skillfully ensures that you still look natural -- not like you’ve “had work done.”

Dr. Volpe assesses your facial structure and age lines to determine the correct dosage. During treatment, he targets the facial muscles that contract excessively and cause wrinkles to form — like the ones between your eyebrows and beside your eyes (crow’s feet). To achieve optimal results from this simple procedure, he may recommend ongoing Botox treatments, because a single injection session isn’t a permanent fix.

You will notice results within three to seven days of your Botox treatment. Those results will last for four to six months, at which point you may decide to schedule additional treatments. Depending on the severity of your wrinkles and desired results, Dr. Volpe recommends how often you should come in to receive Botox injections.

Am I a good candidate for Botox?

Botox injections might be a good solution if you have moderate-to-severe wrinkles between your eyes or on your forehead or neck. Dr. Volpe reviews your medical history and evaluates your overall health to ensure you’re a good candidate for Botox treatment. As long as you don’t have a history of neuromuscular diseases and you aren’t pregnant, Botox may be right for you.

What other wrinkle reducers are available?

Dr. Volpe may suggest dermal filler injections in addition to Botox, or as an alternative type of injection. Dermal fillers can add fullness to your lips, smooth lines around your eyes, reduce the appearance of forehead wrinkles, and boost cheek volume. These fillers help plump aged skin to soften wrinkles and fill in hollow contours.
