Icon Laser Q & A

What is the Icon laser?

The Icon™ Aesthetic System, produced by the company CynosureⓇ, can perform many functions and includes a number of handpieces that are used for specific treatments. The laser works by directing light through the outer layer of your skin to penetrate deep underneath to stimulate healing and new tissue generation. When the heat is delivered to the deeper layers of your skin, your body’s natural healing process kicks in and promotes new collagen and elastin, compounds that form healthy skin structure. Aged, scarred, discolored, or wrinkled skin is replaced by newer, younger, and healthier skin.

What types of issues can be treated with the Icon laser system?

The Icon laser addresses a number of common skin complaints that mar your complexion and may make you feel self-conscious. These include:

  • Acne and other scars
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Photodamage
  • Skin pigment irregularities
  • Stretch marks

Discuss your skin concerns with Dr. Volpe, and he can determine whether Icon laser or intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments are right for your specific skin issues and aesthetic goals. Most skin types can be treated with the Icon laser.

Do the laser treatments hurt?

Most people tolerate the treatments quite well. You may feel some discomfort, but this is moderated by the cooling mechanism produced by the handpiece. Dr. Volpe also offers a topical numbing cream prior to treatment, if you’d like to use it.

Do laser treatments require a lot of downtime?

Most people require minimal downtime. The side effects are usually some redness and mild swelling, as if you’ve had a sunburn. But these effects subside within two to three days – much sooner than if you’d had invasive surgery or ablative laser treatments.

How many laser treatments are necessary to achieve results?

Dr. Volpe develops a customized plan to help you meet your aesthetic goals. Most patients benefit from three to five sessions, usually scheduled two to six weeks apart.

How soon will I notice results from Icon laser treatments?

You may notice an immediate effect from the Icon treatments, but the greatest effects occur over the course of two to three months. Your body needs this time to heal entirely and produce new collagen and elastin.
