Laser Hair Removal Q & A

How does laser hair removal work?

The energy from the Icon system targets pigment in the hair follicles, effectively destroying the follicles so they can no longer produce hair. The laser is quite precise and targets only hair follicles; you don’t have to worry about the laser affecting the surrounding skin.

Hair grows in cycles, and the follicles targeted while in the growth cycle are destroyed with the laser. You need multiple sessions to get as many hairs as possible when they’re in this growth cycle.

The Icon laser works on a variety of skin types, and a session is over a matter of minutes. The exact length of each session depends on the size of the area being treated.

What areas can be treated with Icon laser hair removal?

Just about anywhere on your body that you have unwanted hair can be treated with the Icon laser. Think about the places where you’re tired of shaving every few days or waxing every few weeks. Common sites for treatment include:

  • Back and chest
  • Bikini line
  • Underarms
  • Chin and upper lip
  • Arms
  • Legs

Discuss areas that cause you concern and frustration with Dr. Volpe, and he’ll put together a customized treatment plan for you.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

You may feel some prickling and heat during laser hair removal, but most people tolerate the procedure very well. The team at GLO Aesthetics provides ice packs and cooling gel following treatment to ease discomfort. You may have some mild sensitivity and redness in your skin following treatment, but this subsides in a few hours or in a day.

You should be careful to avoid sun exposure in the weeks following Icon laser treatment because your skin is temporarily extra sensitive to ultraviolet rays.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions you need depends on your hair type, density, and the area being treated. Most people see a significant reduction in growth, and even permanent smoothness, after 5-7 sessions. You can opt to have treatment until no more hair grows, too. Sessions are scheduled about six weeks apart.
