Stretch Mark Treatment Q & A

What are stretch marks?

Stretch marks occur when you “stretch” your skin relatively quickly during periods of rapid growth. They might appear due to pregnancy, muscle gain, growth during puberty, certain medications or medical conditions, or quick changes in your weight. Women more commonly experience stretch marks as compared to men.

The marks appear as lines, or striations, that are reddish, purplish, or brown. When they first appear, stretch marks may be raised and bumpy. With time, they fade to white or silver and smooth out.

Stretch marks form in the middle layer of your skin when the fibers there are subjected to rapid growth. These dermal fibers end up tearing, which makes the deeper layers of your skin show through, which appears as a stretch mark.

Where are stretch marks most commonly found?

Stretch marks commonly appear on the hips and stomach. You may also have stretch marks on your:

  • Upper arms
  • Lower back
  • Thighs
  • Breasts

Most places that have stretch marks can be treated effectively with Icon technology.

How does laser treatment help reduce the appearance of stretch marks?

The Icon improves the appearance of stretch marks by directing fractional laser energy into the skin. The energy penetrates the outer layers, stimulating the formation of new tissue and collagen underneath, so you get smoother, more evenly toned skin.

How many laser treatments will I need to improve the look of my stretch marks?

Every patient’s stretch marks, skin type, and response to the laser is different, and that’s why Dr. Volpe develops a customized plan for you. Most people, however, benefit from between three and five total treatments. These treatments are spaced two to four weeks apart and each session lasts about 30 minutes.

Is there downtime following Icon laser treatments?

Typically, patients require no downtime following laser treatments for stretch marks. You should avoid direct sun exposure during the healing process and for at least the first three months following treatment. Of course, sunscreen can help protect you from the sun’s rays all year round.
